Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

Dear all,
after some time of "silence" and internal test is time to call for testers.
The RC5 should become the final release if no big show stopper are discovered.
The changes from the previous RC3 and RC4 are minimal, we updated the plasma and applications group to the latest versions. (currently on [testing])

https://rsync.chakralinux.org/releases/ … x86_64.iso

There are a ton of new things, starting from a refreshed Heritage and continuing with a revamped installation process with Calamares.

Highlights:
- Calamares 2.3 bringing LUKS support: https://calamares.io/calamares-2.3-is-out/ (We ship 2.4)
- New Heritage theme
- booting with non-free might take a bit of time with a black screen, just wait
- Includes the latest Applications 16.12 and Plasma 5.8.5

Report issues:

please report any issues here or even better in our gitlab bugtracker:

Installation Problems

Hi all,

I downloaded the new ISO tonight and booted it up via VirtualBox with no problem. I looked around a bit, and tried a few apps which worked fine.

However, I then tried to install, but Calamares kept crashing on boot no matter how I tried to launch it - even after rebooting several times. I could only get screenshots of the errors/logs. But I think this error (my typing) may be  problematic:

Translation: QT: Using default locale, system locale one not found: "en_US"

I tried changing language to "en_GB" but it still would not launch. Running from konsole seemed to get me a little further, but I still wound up with this error (my typing):

virtual void Calamares::ViewModule::loadSelf() "Cannot load librar /usr/lib/calamares/modules/partition/libcalamares_viewmodule_partition.so: (libkpmcore.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)"

ASSERT: "thisModule->isLoaded()" in file /chakra/desktop/calamares/src/calamares-2.4.5/src/libcalamaresui/modulesystem/ModuleManager.cpp, line 286

And then it stops. Is there something different I could try w/VirtualBox? I've installed from live sessions before with no problem.

Thanks,
mr park.

Re: Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

@mrpark
That is a known issue unfortunately, there is an ugly bug on RC5 that causes Calamares to crash, hopefully it will be fixed on RC6.

Regarding increasing the publicity of testing ISOs, I intended to share this on social networks once we have a final RC that has no known showstoppers, so we can get more testers and feedback before the final release.

I downloaded the new ISO, and installed it successfully tonight. Am typing this from my new install which is great! I love the speed bump from what I've had on my stable install. Also very happy that Virtual Box guest additions were added by default and configured.

However, there was one error message that popped up in a dialog at the end of the install. The message:

[== Undefined ==]
Installation Failed
Boost.Python error in job “unmount”.

After the dialog, the live session became a bit sluggish and took a bit of effort to shut down and restart. However after that it booted up fine.

One other minor thing that has been happening in testing as well:
In System Settings, if I hit the back button, the entire application crashes. This doesn't happen if I use keyboard shortcut to go back. It seems sporadic  in the ISO though. Was bad earlier tonight, now it is behaving.

Thanks!

Re: Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

That umount error seems to appear at random which makes it very difficult to troubleshoot it. The good news is that so far the installation seems to complete without issues, despite the error message. I will make sure to include this on the release announcement.

Re: Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

Actually, I had wanted to post an update to my last message.

I did another install of the ISO and did not receive the unmount error at the end. System Settings is still crashing for me sporadically but seemingly less often. Other than that, I have had no problems as I've been trying things out and everything is working as I would expect.

I think that's a Plasma 5.8.5 bug because I can replicate that behaviour in my installed system.

Re: Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

Seems some choices aren't retained after install - keyboard goes back to default (I change locale to UK, keyboard to Logitech Media Elite and layout to Extended winkeys) and auto-login isn't remembered.

Re: Live ISO Goedel RC5 - RC6 - RC7

Regarding System Settings crashing, it seems like it is a general Plasma bug, that has roots into upstream Qt:
