This announcement is also available in Spanish and Taiwanese Mandarin.
We are excited to share the outcomes of the first contributors' meeting with all the Chakra community. Even though Chakra has been an active project for around a decade this was the first time the contributors met in person to hack on Chakra. After so many years of collaborating on our favorite distribution, it was great to finally meet and get to know each other better. We really want this to become an annual tradition and hopefully even more contributors and users can attend future meetings.
The meeting took place in the beautiful Verzasca valley in Frasco, Switzerland and five Chakra contributors were present - left to right: Luca (AlmAck), Hans (totte), Neofytos (tetris4), Samir (Ram-Z), Lisa (shainer). It was a great opportunity to spend some productive time together, during which we managed to tackle several pending issues and set the path for the future of Chakra.
Below you will find some notable discussions that took place. Please treat them as suggestions, as they need to be further examined and approved by the majority of Chakra contributors in order to proceed with implementing them.
We want to improve transparency of our procedures, bring our tools forward and enable involvement so our community can continue to grow and our distribution to improve. What keeps Chakra active and evolving over the years is the flow of users that take the step forward and become contributors. We want to make Chakra even more accessible and inclusive. We are very proud for the healthy and diverse community we have built and the friendly team spirit we share and we would love to welcome more people who adopt the same values.
We aim at reintroducing Chakra to potential users as we believe it offers a unique experience that can be suitable for many user cases and we should communicate this better.
- Our frontpage will show snippets for the latest news and commits.
- The contributors list will be updated and include all active developers, packagers, translators and testers.
- A tools page will be added, to list and describe all our actively developed projects, show who is working on what and how.
In addition to the above, we discussed:
A lot of work was done on various Chakra tools and some long standing issues and bugs were resolved. We also had a key signing party to improve the trust of the keys we sign the packages with.
Revenue and Sponsorship
Thanks to Host1Plus our server is fully sponsored nowadays. However, to help our community grow, we want to be able to make use of available funds to sponsor future Chakra meetings, contributors traveling long distances or going to 3rd party events that will benefit Chakra. We decided to run an annual campaign with a goal of 1000€. We will also try and contact some vendors to provide official Chakra merchandise.
We already have some testing implementations of several of the above ideas. If you are interested to check them out or want to learn more details regarding decisions on future development, please follow the related thread on our mailing list. We will of course keep you posted as all the new tools start to roll out and are available to all users!
The valley is stunning! Some of its main attractions are the romanic bridge with the crystal clear blue waters of the Verzasca river running under it, the Contra Dam (made famous by the opening scene in James Bond Goldeneye) and the hiking trails and waterfalls.
We visited Bellinzona and its 3 castles that are under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
We got a chance to play with a 3D printer and print all sorts of Chakra memorabilia! We also had available a Raspberry Pi which we used as a music server and got a chance to flash Plasma Mobile on a nexus phone. And of course, we had stickers, because, who doesn't love stickers?
Take a look at the full album if you are interested in checking out all the fun we had! =)
